Creating the right incentives for creators is crucial to driving platform growth. The best way to increase creator productivity and engagement is to incentivize positive actions.

The problems

  • Creator funds (similar to funds at Spotify or TikTok) are a great way to incentivize content and engagement, but they’re hard to set up and administer.
  • Usually there are a bunch of actions your users can take that increase value on the platform: content uploads, reviews, referring friends, but no easy good ways to incentivize this behavior.

The implementation details

Creator Fund

Purpose: Share a % of platform revenue with creators to drive content creation and engagement.
Time to set up: 1.5 hours

  1. Create the strongest possible relationship with your users by launching a Creator Fund.
  2. Map the actions you want to incentivize as part of this structure. (eg. Content creation, having content accessed, number of likes and shares, quality scores.)
  3. Configure how much you want to distribute per action. (eg. 10 Units per upload, 1 Unit per share, 20 Unit each time content is accessed.) You should weight these actions proportionate to the value of this action to your platform.
  4. Decide which users you want to qualify for the fund. This can be all your users, or a subset based on engagement (ie. top users only). You can easily set this in Village.
  5. Decide on the total fund payout amount and frequency. This can be a fixed dollar amount (eg. $10k per month) or a % of your platform revenues.
  6. Set your fund live!
  7. Users can see what actions drive what awards in their wallet dashboard, how many units they’ve earned and what payment is due to them on a periodic basis.
  8. Awards, payout, and administration are automated and can be managed through the Village admin dashboard.

Creator Loyalty

Purpose: Share valuable awards with creators to drive content creation and engagement.
Time to set up: 1 hour

  1. Drive the right behaviors on your platform using non-monetary in-kind rewards like increased content visibility, or access to other tiered benefits.
  2. Map the actions you want to incentivize as part of this structure. (eg. Content creation, having content accessed, number of likes and shares, quality scores.)
  3. Configure how much you want to distribute per action, (eg. 10 points per upload, 1 point per share, 20 points) each time content is accessed. You should weight these actions proportionate to the value of this action to your platform. 
  4. Decide which users you want to qualify for each benefit. Usually a simple way to do this is to create three tiers within Village and map benefits to each tier.
  5. What benefits accrue at each tier is totally up to you. This can be things like increased visibility of a creator’s content, VIP support, increased earnings opportunities or something as simple as a digital badge or avatar on the user’s profile.
  6. Users can see what actions drive what awards in their wallet dashboard, how many points they’ve earned and how they’re progressing to the next tier.
  7. Awards and administration are automated and can be managed through the Village dashboard.

Referrals

Purpose: Drive viral growth on your platform through powerful referral structures.
Time to set up: 30 minutes

  1. Many creators are running a business. Simple credit based referral awards don’t cut it.
  2. Allow creators to share in the earnings of anyone that they’ve referred.
  3. Configure a simple trailing referral award in Village. Creators get 5% of the earnings of anyone they refer up to a $500 cap (both amounts can be easily configured).
  4. Launch your incentive. Creators will see this incentive in their wallet dashboard. It’s a great way to drive viral growth.
